"Tasks can be assigned at runtime using a built-in substitution mechanism. This allows you to assign tasks (and Permissions, etc.) to users that serve in roles specific to individual items (like Document Owner). Method code can also be used to implement more sophisticated assignment logic. "

What/where is this builtpin substitution mechanism?

I have an item that has a workflow activity assigned to the owned_by_id which is set by a selection box on the form. The name/identity in that box can be changed any time before taking the path to the activity assigned to the owner. When the name is changed, the indicated owner _appears_ to be changed as well. And, when the item arrives at the owner's assigned activity, the correct person gets email. But, the item does not appear in their InBasket, and when view workflow is selected it shows the item assigned to the first name entered as owner, not the current one -- but it isn't in their InBasket either. The item is thus stuck in the workflow with no one able to advance it.

Suggestions?

Hi Dave,

Any chance the ItemType that you are routing on the workflow is Versionable?    There was fix recently released to correct some behaviors for versionable items, specifically related to workflow assignments.
