6.2 View and Edit Options

Once you have located the desired Document using the search dialog, you can open it in either view or edit mode. For view mode, select the row with the document and click the View button, or just double-click on the row. For edit mode, select the row with the document and click the Edit button. Characteristics of View mode versus Edit mode are as follows:

View Mode

  • Is used when you have no intention of modifying the file, and wish to just read the file, copy content from it, or do a Save As to Aras with it.
  • Is the only possible mode if you don't have rights to lock the Aras Document, for example if the Document is released or locked by someone else.

Edit Mode

  • Is used when you intend to modify the contents of the file.
  • Will lock the Aras Document, such that no one else will be able to perform modifications until you unlock it.

If you attempt to open the file using Edit mode, and the system is unable to lock the Document, the connector will prompt you if it is OK to open the file for view only.

It is possible to open the file for view only, and later lock the Aras Document to allow you to perform edits. However, if someone has modified the Aras Document in the meantime, you will be unable to lock since your file will be outdated. See the next section for details.
