Featured Article: "On Par with the Leaders" - Why Aras is Recognized as a New Member of the PLM Elite

Last month, Engineering.com did a feature article on Aras which explains how and why Aras has become one of the top PLM companies worldwide. The lead-in premise is our achievement of a significant milestone in the PLM industry:

“In the PLM business, being named to the "PLM Mind Share Leaders" list by analyst firm CIMdata, is a big step.

“This exclusive group contains the major players in this fairly static world. So far, only Dassault Systèmes, Siemens PLM, Autodesk, SAP, PTC, IBM and Oracle have passed through the eye of the needle. [Until now]

“No doubt, recent wins including General Motors (50,000 seats) and global automotive supplier Schaeffler Group (20,000 seats) were important reasons for Aras’ promotion — in the latter case, Aras notably won over PTC’s Windchill. However, their open source business model, marketing strategy and architecture technology were also decisive reasons.”

The article goes on to discuss the benefits of our breakthrough platform technology– more scalable, flexible and upgradable - and mission-critical nature for Digital Twin configuration and related Digital Thread.

Overall, Verdi Ogewell at Engineering.com did a pretty good job summing up why global companies are choosing Aras over the legacy PDM systems mainstays in the market.

Check it out and share with others that might be interested to know about Aras and why we’re the fastest growing PLM worldwide.

NEWS: Silver Lake & GE Make Investment in Aras

Earlier this month we had some great news with the announcement of a $40 million investment from Silver Lake and General Electric (GE).

While everyone knows GE, those that have been in PLM for a while will recognize Silver Lake as well.

They are the largest technology-focused private equity firm in the world, and were lead investors in UGS Solutions back in 2004. They know PLM! And they only invest in market leading disruptors. In this case us/Aras :-)

GE Ventures’ managing director of advanced manufacturing & enterprise, Steve Taub, explained their participation by saying, “To power the next wave of global industrial productivity, GE is investing in critical foundational capabilities for the Industrial Internet. Aras’ PLM platform delivers Digital Twin product configuration and Digital Thread traceability across the lifecycle which are critical to analyzing and interpreting data from products and the factory. As a customer, we have already seen the benefits of their PLM platform in action.”

With this minority investment we will continue to drive growth worldwide, expand operations - including our world-class service and support - and further extend our technology leadership.

FEATURED POST: Promise of the Digital Thread

Last month, we continued our series of posts with a focus on the Digital Thread to get more inputs from everyone. As you know, we feel that Digital Twin / Digital Thread initiatives really need a PLM platform approach like ours to be successful.

Here are some excerpts from my Digital Thread post. Give it a read and I’d love to hear your opinions on the topic.

Promise of the Digital Thread

What happens after a rocket unintentionally explodes or a plane crashes or some other catastrophic event occurs?

Tracing critical information back from the actual unit that failed to its specific design, manufacturing and supplier data can take weeks or months and often times even longer.

The ability (or inability) to trace back through the lifecycle - and time required - can cause tens of millions in losses… or worse; customer safety issues, operational shutdowns, brand damage, regulatory actions, liability and other business damaging results.

What Benefits does a Digital Thread provide?

Traceability in critical situations is clearly a key benefit. Others listed in papers which include the topic such as the USAF’s Global Horizons - Global Science and Technology Vision and the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Vision 2030: Factory of the Future:

  • Reduce development cycle time
  • Quantify risk at critical decision points and avoid late defect discovery
  • Optimize manufacturability, inspectability, and sustainability
  • Allow product characteristics and performance to be better understood and improved throughout the life cycle
  • Traceability across the life cycle
  • Full Visibility + Automated Recourse

That last bullet point is important. It hints at the fact that the Digital Thread will be essential to enable the Smart in ‘smart factories’ and ‘smart connected products.’

What they’re saying is that for artificial intelligence / cognitive computing to be useful - and more importantly - to avoid misinterpretations that can lead to disastrous mistakes, you need “meaningful” connections between data in different systems.

Critical Aspects of the Digital Thread

Really seems the Digital Thread is the Relationship connections between all of a product’s digital assets - and their revisions - over the course of the product’s lifecycle including - but not limited to - versions of BOMs, parts, software, electronics, CAD models, documents, requirements, process plans, service manuals, etc.

To truly be effective the Digital Thread needs “meaningful” relationships that include additional descriptive / semantic information which conveys:

  • Context – What does it mean if a Part is connected to another Part? Are they part of a BOM? Or are they FFF Alternates? What does the connection mean?
  • Dependency - Especially when both data items are changing over time (e.g. Fixed vs Float)

These points along with other scenario-specific descriptive information are critical to enable a true Digital Thread from my perspective, and that begs the question of “What it is Not”:

  • Not just ‘Engineering to Manufacturing’ but all the way through the Lifecycle from Concept to actual Use and ultimately retirement.
  • Not just ‘Mechanical CAD to CAM’ but across all disciplines including software, electronics, wire harness, hardware, requirements, etc, etc, etc.
  • Not just ‘inside the 4 walls’ but out to Suppliers and into the Field
  • Not just a bunch of (meaningless) ‘point-to-point web links’ between data in disparate systems but meaningful relationships
