As yearend approaches, we're talking with companies all over the world that are working on achieving results on their PLM initiative. Whether you're rolling out a new Aras solution, finalizing the purchase of your subscription before the end of the year or getting a budgetary estimate for 2011 planning... get in touch and we can help.

There are also a lot of companies demonstrating the true spirit of corporate community commitment through collaborative projects and contributions. I've highlighted one in the Featured Projects section and there are a number of others as well that deserve Thanks and a round of applause for their efforts... you know who you are, Nice Work.

NEWS - Aras-Trubiquity to Connect Cloud-based Secure File Sharing into PLM Workflow
This morning we announced our new partnership with Trubiquity which is a global provider of managed file transfer services (i.e. secure file sharing for corporate supply chains). What we're doing is connecting Aras to Trubiquity's Cloud-based services for highly secure collaboration / file exchange directly from within the PLM workflow.

What does that really mean? It means that you'll be able to seamlessly share CAD files, schematics & layouts, BOMs, specs, process plans and more with the click of your mouse... all from within Aras.

That's with no seperate system to buy, no additional servers required, no endless man months of implementation or integration necessary... it's just there... whenever you need it.

Today, over 6,000 companies worldwide already use Trubiquity's service. It's the #1 provider in the automotive supply chain and used across the aerospace, defense, industrial and electronics industries as well.

This is the first in a series of announcements you will hear in the coming weeks and months regarding the connection of these types of Cloud-based services into our PLM backbone. The intent is to provide your company with real process innovation opportunities that you can use to truly transform your business, your supply chain, your bottomline.

If you need more of an overview to get your arms around these concepts, check out my post from earlier this month titled, Why the Networked Business will be Cloud Connected,

...and if what you really need is a highly secure way to share files with your business partners, contact me directly to find out about becoming an Aras-Trubiquity lead user.

FEATURED PROJECT - Rules-driven Product Configurator for Complex Variants & Options
This month's project was actually featured back in 2009, however, one of the companies using it has recently contributed some significant enhancements so I thought it was worth featuring again... it's also a fairly popular solution add-on (>800 downloads to date).

The solution add-on addresses a particularly complicated aspect of Bill of Materials (BOM) configuration management, Variants and Options, which are important in Assemble-To- Order / Build-To-Order / Configure-To-Order businesses. Variant & Option scenarios are difficult to manage because of the numerous combinations and permutations involved on a product-by-product or system-by-system basis.

Keiper-Recaro / KEIPER GmbH Co., the leading global manufacturer of recliner seating systems, added a Code+Options configuration engine which expands the rules-driven aspect of the solution in Build 3.0.

The solution enables:

  • A wide variety of different scenarios
  • Color-coded selections for fast & easy entry
  • Variant choices depending on part, product or product line
  • Product configurator with company-specific business rule capabilities
  • Creation of unique Order-Specific BOMs that can be transferred to ERP and more
It was originally developed back in 2008 with GSI, the world's largest manufacturer of galvanized steel storage bins, and they presented an excellent case study explanation of the Variant & Option challenge at the 2008 ACE conference. The scenarios are complex enough to choke an SAP or Oracle ERP system and are particularly difficult for most PLM systems as well, requiring extensive data model changes and custom business logic programming.

Special thanks to KEIPER for making these improvements and for contributing back so that everyone can take advantage.

INFO - New PLM information site Product-Lifecycle-Management.info
Have you ever been asked by a colleague "What is PLM?". Do you ever want a few quick examples of PLM ROI? Are you trying to figure out the alphabet soup of acronyms in PLM terminology?

Well you're not alone. We get asked about these topics everyday. Even summary level information can be challenging to find and time consuming to gather. And in the PLM world, if you ask the same question to 3 people, you're probably going to get 5 answers.

So, we went ahead started the Product-Lifecycle-Management.info site as an informational guide to understanding PLM. The site has a wide range of PLM reference info and lots of facts & figures from a variety of sources. This is the kind of stuff you want if you're outlining a PLM strategy, working on justifying PLM in your organization or even just trying to get a basic understanding of the topic.

The site provides a lot of key information about PLM, and we've included multiple view points and perspectives along with lots of links to other sites that have more in-depth information on specific topics that you're going to want to check out as well. However, it's still pretty new and is by no means exhaustive or complete at this point.

In fact, if you think there's some important PLM information that should be listed and is not on the site, please let us know. Other PLM resources, additional PLM terms & definitions, good white papers, blog posts, videos and other materials - whatever you think we should put on the site, just tell us.

And if you think the site has good PLM info, make a link to it on your Web site or blog - you might be helping someone else in the community find what they're looking for.
