Featured Article

We’ve been doing a lot here at Aras around the concept of the Digital Twin, and have been getting inputs from many of you. We believe our PLM platform approach supports Digital Twin / Digital Thread initiatives particularly well, and I’ve included some from my recent follow-up post below. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Earlier in the summer I was able to participate in a Digital Twin workshop led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Eigner at the Prostep Symposium in Germany. It had over 30 participants from Airbus, BOSCH, Daimler, Philips, Schaeffler, thyssenkrupp, ZF and other businesses actively working on Digital Twin initiatives.

How will Digital Twins be Used?

Given that many of the companies in the session have long-life systems products - vehicles, aircraft, industrial equipment, etc. - there was a lot of emphasis on using Digital Twins as a way to monitor operations, improve maintainability and reduce downtime. Industrial Internet, Industry 4.0, “smart factory” and IoT asset field maintenance were clearly top-of-mind.

About midway through the discussion the topics morphed into more ‘new opportunity / new revenue’ type scenarios. Using connected product data to understand unanticipated usage patterns, identify individually-specialized features, enable targeted product customization and deliver new value…

What Information is in a Digital Twin?

This is an interesting question. The easy answer is “everything,” however, this response was quickly picked apart by people undertaking real world initiatives.

The key point made was that different information are relevant and necessary for different purposes at different stages.

  • Structured information vs. Flat?
  • Comprehensive & deep vs. high-level subsets?
  • Generic virtual models vs. instance-based product-specific?
  • Etc, etc, etc…

Over and over again, everyone came back to the same conclusion: Business model plans dictate use cases, and use cases drive the required informational sets. In other words, the way your company plans to create value and make money will determine the type of Digital Twin information you’ll need.

There was also an interesting discussion at the end that seemingly split the room.

Are the time series data coming back from sensors:

  • Part of the Digital Twin? (in addition to product configuration)
  • Or something more like the “Vital Signs” of the Physical Thing - which then get interpreted and analyzed against the Digital Twin product configuration?

There was no clear consensus on this, just lots of opinions…

What’s your take? Let me know what you think about these points and others.

NEW RELEASE: Office Connector with Visual Collaboration

Our latest update for the Aras Office Connector (11R5) was released at the end of May.

For those that don’t know about the Office Connector for Aras, it extends the PLM capabilities from our platform directly into Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Top enhancement in this recent release is the introduction of Visual Collaboration inside Microsoft Office…

 Visual Collaboration inside Microsoft Office?!?

 That’s a BIG deal!!

It means that in addition to being able to create, store, edit, search and manage documents all without leaving Office…

People can now have secure discussions inside Office that are in Context and become part of your product information. Decisions are recorded. Design intent is captured automatically. No effort by users.

BTW, we also fixed some minor bug and improved performance, like we always do.

Subscribers can get the latest update by contacting Aras Support or your Aras certified partner.

TECH TIP: Further Example of Federated Data

Here's a helpful Tech Tip for people doing Federated Integrations in their environment.

Further to the main article on How To Use Federation following is a simple implementation of using Federated Data from an External Database and displaying it in a Relationship Tab.

 Use Case:

  • Want to display On-hand Inventory and Part Description information from an external database as a tab of the Part ItemType.
  • The external database is located somewhere that the Innovator Server has network access to.
  • The Part Inventory relationship will be added to the Part ItemType.
  • When a user selects the tab a connection to the external database will be made and on-hand inventory and part description information will be displayed…

Preview Images with the Aras Form Preview

In Aras Innovator 11 SP9, Aras introduced the new Form Preview feature to the main grid. This allows users to select a row and see the item’s form in a preview pane on the main grid. Administrators can also configure custom “preview” forms that are rendered in the preview pane instead of the ItemType’s default view form. In this post, we walk through how you can take advantage of the Form Preview feature and custom forms to implement an image previewer.

Create an ALM-PLM Integration with GitLab

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is important for product development as the amount of software and also the liability of software increases in today’s products. At Aras we have multiple initiatives regarding ALM – from connecting to a repository, to connection to ALM solutions, and even building our own ALM solution. In this blog post I wanted to illustrate, using federation, how we could integrate Aras PLM with GitLab serving as an ALM.
