Bridge the gap between engineering and manufacturing.

Eliminate time-consuming manual processes and costly EBOM/MBOM conflicts.

Improve efficiency by synchronizing process plans, MBOMs and work instruction.

Implement a digital thread with as-designed to as-planned traceability.

The company has product lifcycels that can extend to 20 – or even 30 years! With such lengthy product lifecycles, having an efficient and long-lived information management system is definitely crucial to the success of the company.

Before Aras, Yanmar stored much of their information in a combination of different data management systems – a PDM system, a sales logistics solution and many standalone spreadsheets. Because of the legacy document management system and the use of the standalone spreadsheets, critical customer information was very difficult to find.

As the company continued to grow, Yanmar knew they had an increasing challenge with their segmented data management system. When deciding whether they should continue to use their system or replace it with a product lifecycle management system, the company discovered Aras and decided to explore further.

Aras provides Yanmar with a unified PLM backbone that is accessible by all users in multiple departments and locations. One of the major benefits that Yanmar found was the ability to customize the solution in-house so they could have a PLM solution that fit their business needs.

With Aras, Yanmar:

Improved information storage and retrieval

Increased collaboration with a unified solution for data management that is accessible to all essential employees

Streamlined customer service and quotation process for customers

“From a business perspective, Aras was an easy choice not only because of the subscription model and lower total cost of ownership, but also because upgrades and training were included in the subscription price,” said Keiji Otsubo, Planning Division at Yanmar Energy systems.

We recorded the session so you can watch it at your own convenience.

The December Demo Series was a bit different than our typical Demo Series webinars. To wrap up 2016 we hosted a special 90-minute demo series event. Joined by a few of our great partners we demonstrated innovative modeling examples using the Aras Innovator platform.

Didn't get a chance to attend the demo series? No problem! We know how busy December can be so we recorded the whole webinar. Get the video

The Line Up:

A new way to visualize Aras data: A Graph Viewer

Minerva

Developed for Airbus, this Graph extension on top of Aras Innovator allows end users to visualize data as oriented graphs for a better understanding of the data and the relationships between them. Easy and friendly interface, filtering capabilities, and discover mode.

How to use Innovator core functionality and custom API's to display items and their various manifestations to users

Aras

This demo will help customers who wishes to implement a complete system for managing their entire product information management process. Customers who has the need to classify their information based on Model, Series and Line can benefit from this solution approach. The solution is designed to be scalable and maintainable with minimal code modifications.

Add and Remove Affected Items on an In Work Change

Razorleaf

Sometimes a change process requires additional affected items to completely implement the change. Depending on the state of the change, it may not be possible to add additional affected items, so a second change is started. This solution will allow additional affected items to be added to the change and have all of the same business rules applied as if it were on the change from the start. The solution also works for removing affected items.

Dynamic Workflow Assignments

EBD Advisors

When a customer needed the ability to change workflow assignments after initialization of the workflow process we created a custom solution to manage the business process. We modeled a custom workflow process behaviors so that changes to the Team assigned to the Controlled Item would be reflected in future assignments within that specific workflow process.

BOM Editor

AESSiS

Making changes to multiple levels of a product structure can be time consuming. To increase efficiency, we created a BOM Editor that gives you the ability to manipulate and edit all levels of a multi-level BOM simultaneously in a single interface.

For more information and upcoming demos visit www.aras.com/demoseries

Innovate at ACE 2016 Europe

Our 7th annual ACE 2016 Europe conference is right around the corner and it is sure to be a great event! Starting November 8th, product lifecycle management industry leaders will come together in Berlin, Germany to collaborate on strategies that address the growing complexity in global product development, systems engineering, manufacturing and the supply chain.

Not sure if ACE is right for you? No problem. ACE offers the perfect open learning environment for everyone, from companies expanding their Aras deployment, to businesses that are just starting a PLM initiative or replacing a legacy PDM system. Whether you're a business executive at a large enterprise, manager at a midsize company, or the IT pro at a start-up, you'll get valuable information and insight necessary to achieve success with PLM and with Aras.

The agenda features lots of exciting, interesting and informative sessions. We have a great line up of customer speakers such as, Saab Aeronautics, Aeronamic, Romer Labs, Nidec and still more to come. Some of the most popular topics in the PLM industry are on the agenda. We have sessions on Systems Engineering and MBSE in conjunction with PLM, ALM / PLM integration, Product Development and Supply Chain Collaboration, Integrated Technical Publications and so much more. We also provide lots of time for attendees to network and collaborate with each other, after all that is what our ACE conferences are all about. There will even be an unconferenced session where any of the attendees have the chance to ask Peter Schroer, our CEO and Founder, along with Rob McAveney, Chief Architect, any questions they would like. And yes they will actually answer them!

This is without a doubt an event you won't want to miss. Space will fill up fast so be sure to reserve your spot for ACE Europe today: www.aras.com/ACE2016Europe

Interest in Cloud-based product lifecycle management is growing fast and deployments are becoming more and more common.

One of the big problems is that people are talking about "going to the Cloud" as if you're just going to wake up tomorrow and decide to move everything... everyone knows that's just not going to happen. Yet, the cloud hype continues.

Chad Jackson from Lifecycle Insights has actually put some thought into when, how and why large enterprises might consider using the Cloud for specific PLM scenarios.

He's identified some different scenarios that could benefit from Cloud-based solutions and are particularly relevant to global companies and might make sense to consider:

) Organizations entering into rapid co-development projects:

Sometimes when companies want to hit fast moving market windows they engaged with customers, strategic suppliers, and outsourced manufacturers. In this scenario it is common that both parties are not willing to share the data and information that is in their own PLM systems. The solution is a PLM system that can be easily and quickly deployed, accessed by all key parties and must be flexible to meet the needs of both parties.

2.) Separate & Finite Duration Programs

Situations arise where the business unit is unable to use the existing PDM/PLM system and needs a new environment. This is commonly because the developmental effort requires highly specialize practices and methodologies that sometimes only fit this one project or program. We tend to see these types situations arise in the Aerospace and Defense industries. To handle this scenario, a PLM system that is quick to deploy, flexible, upgradeable, secure and can support highly specialized needs and compliance requirements is key.

3.) Separate or Transitional Development Scenarios

We all know that change is inevitable in the business world. Sometimes when undergoing mergers, acquisitions, divestiture or Join Ventures, operations, including product development, must be separated out as a stand-alone PLM environment for the new organization. This scenario calls for a PLM system that is quick to deploy, can easily handle data migration and be able to provide archiving and retrieval methods.

These scenarios demand an alternative to traditional PDM systems. "Technology advancements combined with new business models provide a promising alternative. A flexible, agile PLM solution deployed on the Cloud meets the fast start-up time requirements of these scenarios. These new Cloud-based solutions represent an excellent fit for decentralized development projects and programs," notes Chad.

Read the full Lifecycle Insights article: http://aras.com/plm/003310

What Can Aras Technical Documentation do for you?

As many of you know that when creating technical publications like catalogs, maintenance & training manuals, and regulatory filings, legacy technical publishing systems require that data be copied from multiple sources – which can be a slow and error-prone process.

Aras Technical Documentation - built on the Aras Innovator platform - is a web-based content authoring and publishing tool that takes a new and innovative approach to the creation of technical publications. This solution is built on core PLM (product lifecycle management) functionality which enables data reuse and facilitates change management - improving the accuracy of technical publications.

Aras worked in partnership with Orio AB (formerly Saab Original Parts AB) to develop the Technical Documentation solution. The web-based solution allows many publications to share the same source information in a modular fashion – eliminating data duplication. Document authoring is managed using templates which ensure publications conform to regulatory requirements, industry standards and corporate formatting.

Benefits of using Technical Documentation:

Use of embedded PLM content cuts out rewriting/re-keying time and eliminates opportunities for error

PLM-based solution means document authoring teams have access to the latest product data in a single location

Modular content schemas drive content re-use, saving time and improving document accuracy

Collaboration with multiple authors across departments and geographical locations reduces document lead time

The team required rapid deployment capabilities, ruling out pretty much any other traditional PLM/PDM system. The company decided they needed to take an agile approach to PLM in order to meet their aggressive timeline.

Desktop Engineering says that the global leader set out to consolidate and standardize its hardware groups on a core product development platform using an alternative approach - building on top of an open, cloud-based PLM platform and leveraging its expertise in agile methodologies. The approach Microsoft took is beneficial to many companies because it is a flexible process that has high user involvement, which reduces the risk that you spend a lot of time developing something that isn't what the users want. Microsoft's agile implementation of Aras led to a global deployment completed in record time and has lots more functionality than the previous PLM system they had.

Boris Cononetz, the senior business operations and program management manager at Microsoft explains that with Aras and the agile implementation method, "We built the same capabilities or better in nine months than what it had taken us about seven or either years to create with the previous systems."

Read the full article by Desktop Eningeering: http://aras.com/plm/003286

Companies rely heavily on their PLM system to mainly support mechanical design but they were never intended to manage product development of complete systems with hardware, software and electronics all together

Product teams can't easily handle specialized business processes and requirements, slowing their ability to adapt to fast-changing conditions

Heavily customized PLM implementations are difficult to upgrade making it hard for an organization to keep pace with their evolving strategy and process needs

New technology platforms exist to alleviate the pain of legacy PLM implementations and move the enterprise forward and Aras offers that new technology.

So what does it take to power today's business of engineering?

"It takes a paradigm shift to a platform approach combined with the will to change by bringing together people, processes and systems across the various disciplines and the extended enterprise. Rethinking the business of engineering lets companies achieve seamless design, development and delivery of tomorrow’s smart, connected innovations," says Peter.

Check out the full article: http://aras.com/plm/003285

He writes that the Aras product lifecycle management (PLM) solution provides solid value whether used as the sole data and process management solution, like at Microsoft, or in conjunction with other existing implementations, like at Airbus. Verdi also touched on why Airbus and Microsoft chose Aras and the benefits that Aras Innovator provides the companies with.

Airbus evaluated several different PLM platforms but chose Aras based on:

Open architecture

Significant coverage of expected scope

Upgrade services for customization included with subscription

Easy integration

Long term viability

Total cost of ownership.

Microsoft on the other hand is great example of how Aras is used in a very different way, where the solution is the foundation of the development activities. Microsoft says the benefits include:

Adoption of global parts to drive re-use

Simplified user experience capabilities when accessing the system and product data

Fewer resource requirements in IT and the business

An agile platform

The concluding statement Engineering.com makes is, "Are onePDM and the big bet at Airbus enough to establish Aras as a "big league" player, and to eventually earn a place on the PLM 'Olympics' podium?" What do you think?
