As many engineering and product development teams well know, there is a lack of integration between manufacturing process planning, EBOM, MBOM, and work instructions. This results in information silos that create gaps in traceability and makes it difficult to keep data synchronized – directly impacting product cost, quality and time to market. As product complexity increase this problem dramatically increases as well.

We recently released Aras Manufacturing Process Planning (MPP) - a solution to help solve these problems. Since the new application is built on our product lifecycle management (PLM) platform it is just as flexible as our other applications. We created MPP to manage the complex business processes extending from product development to manufacturing.

New capabilities bring together the Manufacturing Process Plan, Work Instructions and MBOM making them interdependent and automatically synchronized as changes occur. This innovation enables direct EBOM to MBOM translation, which bridges the gaps enterprises have and creates the process foundation necessary for Industry 4.0 initiatives.

With Aras MPP, global product teams can define manufacturing processes at the same time and at multiple plants, therefore bridging the gap between engineering and manufacturing. Yanmar Energy System's Unified Approach to Data Management with Aras

Yanmar Energy Systems is a leading Japanese manufacturer of air conditioning and power generation systems. The company has product lifcycels that can extend to 20 – or even 30 years! With such lengthy product lifecycles, having an efficient and long-lived information management system is definitely crucial to the success of the company.

Before Aras, Yanmar stored much of their information in a combination of different data management systems – a PDM system, a sales logistics solution and many standalone spreadsheets. Because of the legacy document management system and the use of the standalone spreadsheets, critical customer information was very difficult to find.

As the company continued to grow, Yanmar knew they had an increasing challenge with their segmented data management system. When deciding whether they should continue to use their system or replace it with a product lifecycle management system, the company discovered Aras and decided to explore further.

How can the Cloud & PLM help Your Global Enterprise?

Cloud hype has been growing in the PLM industry for awhile now. Interest in Cloud-based product lifecycle management is growing fast and deployments are becoming more and more common.

One of the big problems is that people are talking about "going to the Cloud" as if you're just going to wake up tomorrow and decide to move everything... everyone knows that's just not going to happen. Yet, the cloud hype continues.

Chad Jackson from Lifecycle Insights has actually put some thought into when, how and why large enterprises might consider using the Cloud for specific PLM scenarios.

He's identified some different scenarios that could benefit from Cloud-based solutions and are particularly relevant to global companies and might make sense to consider:

) Organizations entering into rapid co-development projects:

Sometimes when companies want to hit fast moving market windows they engaged with customers, strategic suppliers, and outsourced manufacturers. In this scenario it is common that both parties are not willing to share the data and information that is in their own PLM systems. The solution is a PLM system that can be easily and quickly deployed, accessed by all key parties and must be flexible to meet the needs of both parties.

2.) Separate & Finite Duration Programs

Situations arise where the business unit is unable to use the existing PDM/PLM system and needs a new environment. This is commonly because the developmental effort requires highly specialize practices and methodologies that sometimes only fit this one project or program. We tend to see these types situations arise in the Aerospace and Defense industries. To handle this scenario, a PLM system that is quick to deploy, flexible, upgradeable, secure and can support highly specialized needs and compliance requirements is key.

3.) Separate or Transitional Development Scenarios

We all know that change is inevitable in the business world. Sometimes when undergoing mergers, acquisitions, divestiture or Join Ventures, operations, including product development, must be separated out as a stand-alone PLM environment for the new organization. This scenario calls for a PLM system that is quick to deploy, can easily handle data migration and be able to provide archiving and retrieval methods.

These scenarios demand an alternative to traditional PDM systems. "Technology advancements combined with new business models provide a promising alternative. A flexible, agile PLM solution deployed on the Cloud meets the fast start-up time requirements of these scenarios. These new Cloud-based solutions represent an excellent fit for decentralized development projects and programs," notes Chad.

With Aras PLM, Microsoft Devices Group Flexes its Agile Muscles

Desktop Engineering recently wrote an article about Microsoft's new PLM implementation and the benefits of the innovative approach they took.

After many PLM (product lifecycle management) implementation attempts that did not meet their standards, Microsoft decided they needed to do something different. The team required rapid deployment capabilities, ruling out pretty much any other traditional PLM/PDM system. The company decided they needed to take an agile approach to PLM in order to meet their aggressive timeline.

Desktop Engineering says that the global leader set out to consolidate and standardize its hardware groups on a core product development platform using an alternative approach - building on top of an open, cloud-based PLM platform and leveraging its expertise in agile methodologies. The approach Microsoft took is beneficial to many companies because it is a flexible process that has high user involvement, which reduces the risk that you spend a lot of time developing something that isn't what the users want. Microsoft's agile implementation of Aras led to a global deployment completed in record time and has lots more functionality than the previous PLM system they had.

Boris Cononetz, the senior business operations and program management manager at Microsoft explains that with Aras and the agile implementation method, "We built the same capabilities or better in nine months than what it had taken us about seven or either years to create with the previous systems."

Let's Rethink the Business of Engineering

We can all agree that product complexity has increased exponentially over the past years and managing, not only product development or the science of engineering, but also the business of engineering is becoming more and more difficult.

Many of today's manufacturers are struggling to keep pace with fast-moving IoT developments.

Peter Schroer, Aras Founder & CEO, was recently featured in an article on Manufactuirng.net discussing the need to rethink the investments and processes that support the business of engineering.

Peter talks about how lots of companies have found that their PLM systems are severely lacking for three common reasons:

The Battle to the PLM Big Leagues

"Can Aras battle their way into the PLM big leagues?" Of course we can and we will. "Aras has enjoyed a number of successes lately; the Airbus order of 30,000 seats last year is a good example, as is the Microsoft deal," explains Verdi Ogewell from Engineering.com.

He writes that the Aras product lifecycle management (PLM) solution provides solid value whether used as the sole data and process management solution, like at Microsoft, or in conjunction with other existing implementations, like at Airbus. Verdi also touched on why Airbus and Microsoft chose Aras and the benefits that Aras Innovator provides the companies with.

Airbus evaluated several different PLM platforms but chose Aras based on:

Open architecture
Significant coverage of expected scope
Upgrade services for customization included with subscription
Easy integration
Long term viability
Total cost of ownership.

Microsoft on the other hand is great example of how Aras is used in a very different way, where the solution is the foundation of the development activities. Microsoft says the benefits include:
