Aras & TechSoft 3D: A PLM Partnership in Visual Collaboration

To strengthen the Aras Innovator Platform, Aras has partnered with TechSoft 3D to integrate World Class PDF technology. Using TechSoft 3D's HOOPS technology, Aras is able to integrate conversion, viewing and markup capability directly into the core of the product. This enables all Aras applications and user customizations to leverage the technology efficiently.

The Aras Innovator Platform is built from the ground up with the distributed organization in mind. We feature a web based interface using the most popular internet browsers and apps for all of the major mobile platforms. Vice President of Global Alliances, Jay Pappas stated, “We’ve architect-ed a product that has a capability of running wherever the customer wants to deploy it, making product related information available to anybody on any device.”

Enabling Visual Collaboration

Aras licenses the HOOPS Communicator product from TechSoft 3D, providing a complete solution that offers conversion, viewing and markup of product data. The typical use case is conversion 3D CAD models from all popular MCAD systems. They are automatically converted to a 3D view-able format with no user involvement. Aras Visual Collaboration uses these 3D assets for collaborative viewing and markup. This is of particular value to our customers as a way to “break down the barriers” of collaboration within PLM.

With the flexibility of TechSoft 3D's technology, Aras is able to create a seamless user interface and experience. The HOOPS web viewer is directly embedded within Aras' PLM Platform, creating a common approach across all types of view-able content. Users access the advanced capability without the need for extra installation using the web based and mobile clients.

The partnership between Aras and TechSoft 3D extends past Visual Collaboration and further into the PLM digital thread by providing the ability for 3D view-able content within other Aras Applications like Technical Publications. Aras is able to integrate viewing capabilities inside technical documents authored with Technical Documentation and publish this out to PDF with 3D content included.

Aras Manufacturing Process Planning (MPP): Making Product Planning Simple with Aras

Managing complex business processes globally, that extend through product development into manufacturing is now effortless with Aras Manufacturing Process Planning (MPP.) MPP possesses new capabilities that allow the Manufacturing Process Plan, Work Instructions and Manufacturing Bill of Materials (MBOM) to become interdependent and automatically synchronized as changes occur.

Using MPP, a product team has the ability to manage their entire process by concurrently defining manufacturing processes, work instructions and MBOMs while avoiding EBOM/MBOM conflicts. These capabilities provide a level or organization and traceability to your product lifecycle management.

MPP enables direct Engineering BOM (EBOM) to MBOM translation. As a result, the gap enterprises have between the process foundation necessary for Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet initiatives is now bridged together.

Authoring your Process Plan with MPP

With MPP multiple users can edit different levels of the MBOM at the same time, apply conflict resolution and create visually rich electronic work instructions simultaneously with the Process Plan.

MPP provides the ability to add phantoms, consumables, etc. to the MBOM. In addition, MPP has drag and drop editing to restructure the MBOM while maintaining the Digital Thread along with real time automatic reconciliation indicators between the EBOM and MBOM extending from the as-designed to the as-planned configurations.

Microsoft and Aras: Empowering PLM and the Internet of Things

With the growth of connected products, leading companies are investigating how they can make use of data from the Internet of Things (IoT) to create product insights they can leverage in their PLM systems. But whether operating on premise or in the cloud, merging data from PLM and the Internet of Things (IoT) is complex. To simplify implementation, Aras Innovator provides a level of flexibility. As a result, this flexibility allows for adaptation to your way of working. In this video, Simon Floyd of Microsoft explains how the importance of this flexibility lies in the ability to interpret IoT information from Aras Innovator.

Empowering PLM and the internet of things

Operating in the cloud, Microsoft partnered with Aras to demonstrate performance analysis of a jet engine sub-assembly. The sub-assembly contains a bar chart highlighting in-flight performance data received from IoT sensors in that engine. Another chart combines that data with change order information pulled from Aras Innovator. This ability eliminates the problem of looking at data in isolation and instead brings all important information together.

Floyd explains that, by combining performance data with design data an indication of design problems or other issues are surfaced. This gives the opportunity to get ahead of any problems the customer may encounter with the product.

Airbus and The GreenHouse: How Aras PLM is growing their products

Managing your product throughout its lifecycle engages many domain specific teams. When those teams are disconnected or unable to get product data they fall into what we call the “PLM Underground” – using uncontrolled home grown tools to perform duties. Vincent Soumier from Airbus describes this as the “excel syndrome.” The "excel syndrome" causes loss of data, a lack of version control and overall security for your document; something Aras PLM can remedy.

Due to using a GreenHouse environment to empower domain teams, Airbus has created a successful incubator environment to create new data driven applications within Product Lifecycle Management. The GreenHouse ensures all of their product development decisions are made using the most recent configuration controlled data.

Using Aras PLM, Airbus created an agile development platform therefore enabling rapid prototyping of applications and tools within their GreenHouse.

Application Success WITH ARAS PLM

Together with Aras, Airbus has currently been successful completing three applications, Test Information Management (TIM,) Hatrack and MOD Validity Extension.

The TIM application is the first application developed using Aras. TIM is a structural test management system resulting in a successful upgrade.

The second successful application developed is Hatrack. Created to manage overhead storage compartments, Hatrack’s biggest challenge was to answer business needs in an agile way. The application, delivered in 8 months, became a major breakthrough for Airbus and as a result convinced the cabin business to do more with Aras.

The third application developed using Aras is, MOD Validity Extension. This application is a configuration management tool with a follow up to modification. Again Airbus received positive feedback within the business and completed the application with success.

In the video, you will gain an overall understanding of the project pipeline and center of competence within the Airbus GreenHouse.

Consequently, with the success of these applications, the Greenhouse gains Airbus more demand from the business using Aras PLM.
