ARAS TRAINING: Upcoming Sessions

Spring has sprung... and in this month's newsletter you'll find ACE 2015 highlights and presentations, new functionality on our Public Roadmap, new Additive Manufacturing / 3D printing training and a lot more... all designed to help you Rethink PLM... Enjoy.

ACE 2015: Highlights, Summary & Presentations

ACE 2015 kicked off the annual ACE series of global conferences with a bang! This year we had more than 400 community members register, representing more than 180 companies from 24 countries around the world.

The energy at the conference was fantastic. Everywhere I went people were making new connections, collaboration was taking place and new solutions were being discussed.

The theme of this year's event was Rethink PLM. The agenda was packed full of user stories, live demos, round tables and other sessions designed to challenge conventional assumptions and approaches to PLM.

I'd like to personally thank everyone that was able to join us. Your enthusiasm is what makes these events so exciting... and productive. I'd also like to give a special shout out to our sponsors - without their sponsorship we wouldn't be able to make the ACE conferences free events.

And if you couldn't make it this time don't worry, you'll just have to come to one of this year's other ACE events including ACE Japan and ACE Europe this fall.

For more details on ACE 2015 including a summary wrap up, pictures, slides and more check out our ACE blog post.

ARAS ROADMAP: Past Releases Now Shown

We recently updated the Aras public roadmap ( to include previous releases as well as upcoming releases. Now you can see the features included in the releases that were delivered during the prior year (from today's date). Releases that are already available are marked with the word "Released" as show below for Office Connector.

When we made our roadmap Public, people said that was "Unheard of"... and the fact that we offered Voting by anyone & everyone was downright "Crazy". We just thought it was obvious and practical, or practically obvious. Now, based on your feedback, we're just making it that much more useful. Hope this helps, and please keep the suggestions and ideas coming.

NEW TRAINING AVAILABLE: UL Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Training

In the spirit of community and continuous learning we're always on the lookout for useful new training on related product development and manufacturing topics from PLM to CM and now additive manufacturing... or maybe it's just because we're engineering geeks :-)

Everyone knows the field of additive manufacturing is evolving faster and that it's fundamentally changing the way products are produced.

Now, to help people get a handle on this rapidly emerging field the gurus over at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) have formed the UL Additive Manufacturing Competency Center and put together a series of courses designed to provide a range of education on the topic.

Designed to help engineers, managers and executives understand the different aspects of additive manufacturing / 3D printing, these courses cover the basics, technical and business aspects you need to know to use this technology at your company.

They have both online and in-person classes depending on the topic. Here's the course line up if you want to check them out:

TECH TIP: Adding Field Borders to a Form

This month's tech tip is a from editor that allows you to group one or more field controls and place them inside a Group Box control to make things even easier for end users.

When the form is rendered a windows field border surrounds the field controls. Field borders allow you to organize a group of fields that are related in some way and assign a field border legend to make clear the purpose of the fields.

When you associate one or more field controls with a field border they move as a unit when the group box is repositioned on the form.

In the example below the standard created_on and created_by_id properties of an item have been grouped into a field border and assigned the legend "Creator Info"

Adding Field Borders to a Form

  1. Open a Form for edit and add the properties to be included in a field border. In this example the created_by_id and created_on properties have been added to a sample form and relabeled accordingly.

  2. Add another field control to the form using the form toolbar menu – it doesn't matter which control type you choose. In this example, an HTML control is selected and added to the form canvas.

  3. Make sure the HTML control is selected and change the Field Type of the new control to Group Box. Select either Vertical or Horizontal orientation (fields will be "stacked" in a Vertical orientation or sit side by side in a Horizontal orientation). Supply a name for the group box (GroupBox in this example – no space). This becomes the "container" name for properties that are assigned to the group box in a later step.

Adding Field Borders to a Form

  4. Go to the Field Label tab and clear the Label for the Group Box control – the Legend attribute will label the box (next step).
