PLM in These Stressful Economic Times…

Just read today’s CIMdata newsletter which includes a poll on the impact of the global recession on PLM initiatives. The results and analysis highlight some pertinent information.

CIMdata newsletter survey

CIMdata explains the data and goes on to conclude that:

…just over half of the participants indicated that they were concerned that management wouldn’t, or perhaps doesn’t, view their PLM initiative as strategic to the business during these stressful economic times. …poll participants are much less concerned about tactically-oriented budget cuts that can be lived through, than they are that management doesn’t view PLM as strategic to the business. CIMdata’s recommendation based on these results is that PLM teams should continue to regularly update their management teams on the benefits being realized by the business due to continued use and adoption of PLM.
These updates have got to emphasize two critical points. First and most importantly, Cost Savings. In the worst recession since the great depression you have absolutely got to tell management how your PLM initiative is saving the company money. Dollar figures matter.

Second, you should be prepared to explain (in bullet point summary of course) how the PLM software solution will help the business capitalize on the current economic situation to strengthen the competitive position in the marketplace.

What’s your take? Are any of you having trouble getting your CFO to sign-off on the Windchill maintenance invoice?
