The Connected Car: Software Updates Required?

"Those annoying 'Update Required' pop-ups on your smartphone and computer will soon be in your car too," says CNN Money. It's all part of the connected car, and it's coming faster than you think.

Cars are already high-tech devices. Dozens of microprocessors control your steering, acceleration and more. It's gotten to the point that ToyotaTm engineers joke they only slap on wheels to keep the computer from scraping the ground.

There's good and bad news here. Updatable automobile software means fewer recalls and vehicles that can actually get better over time, but it may also mean you'll be running security updates on your car's antivirus software so it doesn't get hacked. Pros and cons, and questions galore, like what if you miss an update? Does that mean your car is unsafe to drive?

One thing is for certain, designing, building, maintaining and servicing vehicles is going to get increasingly more complicated. And car manufacturers and their suppliers need to be ready.
