You Can't Innovate In a Box

Like anyone involved in the PLM world, I too have been following the continued announcements of Autodesk PLM 360.  There was a veritable thunderstorm of posts on twitter yesterday that took up my feed for the better part of the morning on the subject.  I have a few of my own favorites and I’m sure you do as well.

There’s a lot of opinions, ideas, and well – “Buzz” – going on about this “new concept of PLM in the cloud”.  What I like most about all of this press and activity is that it’s keeping the topic of PLM fresh.  Innovative.  Controversial.  Alive.

Then this morning I saw PLMJim’s post on “Is Cloud Panacea for PLM Deployment” and was really taken by the piece.  Particularly the points Jim makes about the evolution of PLM and the misguided notions that a cloud is going to rain down sudden success in a complex environment.

Apparently our CEO was taken by it too because I couldn’t help but notice Peter’s poignant commentary on the subject.  The cloud is another tool in the IT basket of tricks but the primary driver of complexity is configuration management.  A topic Peter has been involved in a few times already.  That cloud is NOT going to cure what ails you. Don’t take my word for it.  Hop on over to Jim’s blog, read it – and weigh in.  After all we can’t innovate in a box.
