- Integration with any CAD
Application
Aras Innovator is designed to support CAD integrations, and community members are building specific integrations. I am aware of a customer-developed UG interface, and implementation partners that are developing a SolidWorks interface and a Pro/Engineer interface. If you are interested in Solidworks or Pro/Engineer, I can introduce you to the developers. This is an area that has a lot of potential for the community, with donations of customer-created open source integrations and partner-driven products. To date, most customers have focused on integrations to existing PDM / CAD file management systems, rather than direct CAD interfaces. - Visualization component
Aras Innovator supports the use of 3rd party visualization packages. We have customers using Cimmetry AutoView and Adobe Acrobat, and others looking at Actify SpinFire as well as the viewers from the CAD companies. - On the fly workflow/lifecycle
routing
Workflows and lifecycles can be definitely be modified while in-process. With the right privileges you can do this interactively, using method code or through the web service. Some examples of workflow automation can be found at: http://aras.comhttp://www.aras.com/Community/files/folders/innovator_framework/entry23.aspx - Ad-hoc Access control –
activity based access control
Each Item in Aras Innovator is linked to a Permission item (similar to an Access Control List), which controls access to that item. Permissions may be specific to a single item (aka Private Permission) or may be the same for many items. Permissions may easily be changed as an item goes through its lifecycle using State Permissions, or may be set through method code or the web service. - Task allocation at runtime
Tasks can be assigned at runtime using a built-in substitution mechanism. This allows you to assign tasks (and Permissions, etc.) to users that serve in roles specific to individual items (like Document Owner). Method code can also be used to implement more sophisticated assignment logic. - BOM material – is it possible
to import from any format?
Pretty much any format can be imported. Aras Innovator communicates natively in XML, so that's the most convenient format, but others like text and Excel can be used.
- Product configuration –
Variants, Is it possible to specify optional products in BOM
The standard Innovator Product Engineering solution does not currently have a concept of variants or optional BOM components. We have had some interest in variants and a configurator tool, and have previous experience with such features. We think Aras Innovator is well suited for this, but we need some help from the community to make it reality. - Cabinet/Folder Management
- Uploading of large data and accessing vaults from outside Aras
The Aras Innovator vault server may be accessed directly as a web service, but authentication will need to be addressed to make it work seamlessly. There is no inherent size limit for files – you're only limited by the web server configuration. Federation is also supported, so large datasets stored externally may be exposed through Aras Innovator without having to import it all. - Classification module
Aras Innovator provides a classification service, which can be configured individually for each ItemType. See the Part and Document ItemTypes for examples. - Enterprise/ERP Integration
Customers and partners have implemented many ERP integrations. However, Aras does not currently deliver or support out-of-the-box ERP integrations. - What is the limit for the
number of attributes that can be added to a Part?
There is no limit (except the maximum number of columns per table in SQL Server 2005). - Directly link part to a
manufacturer
The Product Engineering solution (included with the Aras Innovator download) provides a link between Parts and Manufacturers via the Approved Manufacturer List (AML). A simple one-to-one relationship could easily be configured as well. Parts may also be linked to Vendors/Suppliers through the Approved Vendor List (AVL).
- Can the part number be
generated from an attribute?
Part numbers may be generated automatically from a sequence, which can be based on one or more attributes of the Part. - Copy and Reuse existing BOM for
similar products with minor modifications
A Save-As function is available for all ItemTypes and their configurations. This is a standard feature, and works well for BOMs. - Mass upload / download
Aras Innovator is a web service, so by submitting XML you can upload or download (assuming authentication and permissions) a single record or many at once. - Ability to add different UOMs
UOM is a property of the Part ItemType (included in the Product Engineering solution). This UOM property is linked to a List Item, which can easily be edited to add additional units. - Part number reference changes
I'm not sure I completely understand this question, but I think you are looking for the ability to change a part number without breaking any references. Aras Innovator creates relationships through underlying identifiers, so changing numbers does not affect the references.

I found that vault URL is "$[HTTP_PREFIX_SERVER]$[HTTP_HOST_SERVER]$[HTTP_PORT_SERVER]$[HTTP_PATH_SERVER]/vault/vaultserver.aspx" so I changed it to "$[HTTP_PREFIX_SERVER]$[HTTP_HOST_SERVER]$[HTTP_PORT_SERVER]/vaultserver/vaultserver.aspx" still the error occurs. but the path of vaultserver displayed in error message is correct now.

Our requirement is to store files of size upto 4GB. Will this be possible in vault?

Can you forward any info on the Pro/E and SolidWorks integrators? Additionally, can you provide any info on a Matrix migration effort? Do you have a quickstart tutorial so that we can quickly demonstrate the functionality and get training approved?
Thanks

Hi Rob McAveney,
Thank you very much for your immediate response and detailed information. We will discuss with our team and get back to you if we have any queries.
Thanks ,
Toms

Hi Rob McAveney,
Your clarifications to our previous queries helped us a lot. We ran into more queries.
1. Does ARAS provide any API through which other applications can access the files directy from the vault?
2. Does ARAS provide any tool for migration from Agile?
We are facing the following issues
3. Is there any limitation in size of file to be uploaded in ARAS? When we try to upload files of size greater than 175 MB it fails. We would like to know about this as we may have to upload image files of size around 2GB.
Configuration of the machine used for this uploads :
Intel P4 2.6GHz, 1GB RAM, IE7, Windows XP, JRE 1.6.0_02
I checked for maxRequestLength in web.config file. It was
"<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="50000000" executionTimeout="36000" />"
We are trying this uploads from the server where Innovator is installed.
4. We included the JVUE viewer add-on that came with the ARAS installation in the viewers, and associated the viewer with file extension. But when we try to view a file the page says 'Applet JVue failed to load'. We checked into the HTML source, it was referring to a .cab file which contains the applet's class files. The .cab file is available in the specified location. Is there any other configuration to be made which is not mentioned in the documents?
Thanks and Regards,
Toms

Hi Toms -
- Aras provides a public API to our vault control, which is embedded in the client for vaulting operations. This API can be found by opening the API Reference (under Help) and going to IVaultComIncoming under Aras.Client.Controls. We do not suggest integrating directly with the vault server, since those files are supposed to be controlled by the Innovator server. Therefore, no public API is available. You could try to replicate the requests the vault control sends to the vault server, but those are subject to change and could lead to data corruption if done incorrectly.
- Aras does not provide a standardized tool for migrating from Agile. We do, however, have in-house expertise on such migrations and can offer consulting services to tailor the migration process to specific customer requirements. Please let me know if you are interested in discussing this further.
- There is not supposed to be any limitation on file size. I will have to defer to our support folks to help you figure out why bigger files are not uploading properly.
- The JVUE page included in the distribution is provided mostly for legacy purposes. Aras now recommends and integrates with other add-on viewer packages (contact me for more details). The most common source of problems for the existing JVUE page are mismatch between the revision of the JVUE applet and server, and browser security settings that prevent the JVUE applet from loading.
Hope that helps -
Rob

Hello Toms.
Try to set maxRequestLength="2097151" (2GB = 2097152KB) and switch vault server to .Net Framework 2.0.
You'll be able to upload fies of almost 2GB size.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the quick response.
We are trying to figure out a solution using the APIs you mentioned. I will let you know once this is done.
Please let me know what more information should I provide for your support folks to figure out the cause for failure of file uploading.
What are the recommended viewer packages for image files and CAD files attached with Innovator? Where can I download them?
Thanks and Regards,
Toms
tomsedison - Wednesday, August 29, 2007 11:21 AM:
Hi Snnicky,
I have MaxResultLength as 5000000 in my configuration and .Net Framework 2.0 configured.
I am able to upload and download smaller files, but when I try larger files say 400 MB I get the error saying Check if the vault server MyMachine:8880/.../vaultserver.aspx is correct but my vault server is in MyMachine:8880/.../vaultserver.aspx. I checked the config files, they are pointing to correct path. I checked virtualdirs.xml, it had an entry "<Directory>InnovatorServer/vault</Directory>", I changed it to "<Directory>vaultserver</Directory>". It fails even then.
I think if vault server URL is wrong then it should fail for all the files, then why are smaller files getting uploaded. Please let me know what I am missing.
Thanks in advance,
Toms
