SUPPORT Q&A - Thoughts on PDX or STEP (ISO 10303) or ? for manufacturing data exchange.

One of the things we would like to do with Aras is make it easy to export packages to outside manufacturing where all relevant data is self-contained in some sort of package. It could be as simple as an exported BOM, AML/AVL and relevant drawings/documentation zipped up in a folder structure. To start, we would not like to have outside parties access our PLM system, so we will need to generate these packages ourselves.

Coming from previous Agile experience, I am familiar with creating PDX packages. It also sounds like there is something called STEP (ISO 10303) that might be relevant. In all honesty, to start, it would be fine to just export the BOM and AML/AVL to spreadsheets (hopefully in a nice format; CSV probably works fine) and then have the docs in a folder and zip and go. But it would be helpful to make this automated to some degree.

Has anyone scripted anything like this, or can point me to native Aras functionality that will do such a thing? It would be nice to say, "give me the BOM, AML and docs related to part XYX" and have Aras create that for me.

Anyway, if anyone had any thoughts on this that would be great.

Thanks,

Eric

P.S. As a side note, I don't know anything about STEP, but my understanding is that PDX stores the underlying data (and metadata?) in XML format. Maybe it would be possible to create an XSLT transform to change some AML (Aras Markup Language in this case) data to PDX data, though we probably don't need more than basic spreadsheets for now.
