We have a centralized/shared MS SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition DBMS that might be ideal to use for Aras vs. installing a standalone instance. One question that came up, because the 9.2 platform specs doc recommends Enterprise Editions, can we run Aras on SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition? What would be the drawbacks? Are requirements for 9.3 going to change any in regards to this?
Also, it sounds like in time this shared/centralized SQL Server instance will be upgraded to 2008. Hopefully that is pretty easy.
Another related question I just thought of, but can we use Windows Server 2008 R2? Not sure if it being a 64 bit OS would cause any issues, though I assume it would run 32 bit applications fine. Just thought I'd check in this as well while I am at it. Aras will be installed as a VMware instance, and I was told that Windows Server 2008 R2 was the preferred OS at this time.

Yes you can run Innovator on SQL Server 2005 standard edition. Enterprise is better for the scalability factors. There was no mention of removing support for SQL 2005 in the updates for 9.3 so you should be safe there.
Upgrade to SQL 2008 should also not cause any problems.
Yes you can use Windows Server 2008 R2. Innovator installs to a different default directory and runs as a 32 bit app.
