I created a new property for Part called code_report. It is a text field. Then, I tried to create a new text-box on the Part form to enter/display the field Code Report. On the Data Source pull down list I could see my newly added property code_report, but the text-box would not accept any property from the list. Did I miss something?

Not sure why it isn't letting you select an entry from the dropdown but it is usually easier to use the "Unused Properties" dropdown from the middle tool bar. From this you can select any of the properties that are not already on the form and it will create a new field on the form that it deems most appropriate for the property selected.
You can then change the Field Type if you don't like what it has given you.
