SUPPORT Q&A - Subversion SVN

Aureliano - Thursday, March 22, 2012 4:54 AM:

Trying to get a clear answer on this.  If we use Aras, does this mean that data is stored in the Aras repository, and therefore should not be also stored in an SVN repository?  Can the two play together somehow?

Aras Innovator does have a vault-server (distributed and replicated).  Most companies use the Aras vault for their files,  and then those files are tightly connected to the meta-data and permissions management.

The one exception that I would note is Software source code files.    SVN / CVS / SourceSafe  offer more utilities than just vaulting of files,  and these utilities are high value to software developers.     The check-in / check-out / versioning / lifecycle management /  configuration management functions are completely covered by Aras Innovator Vault Server,    but we do not (yet) have the programming convenience functions that a SVN would include.

Let me know if you are asking about vaulting software source code files.    If you are,  we would be interested in hearing your use cases,  and would collaborate on an integration to SVN,  or replacing the functionality of SVN.      We are developing a full ALM suite of tools for the software development flows,  and the final piece to tackle is the vaulting.

If you are not asking about software source code,  then you can be confident that Aras Innovator can manage all your file based data.
