SUPPORT Q&A - new installation, can't access Innovator -- .NET security problem

tpd15 - Monday, July 29, 2013 9:18 PM:

Hi,

I'm a new user, trying to get my first install of Aras 9.3 up and running. I have installed it on a laptop to try it out, but can't seem to get past the .NET security, as a lot of previous posts here seem to also have run into.

When I try to hit 35emba2013l811/innovatorserver I get the failure message:

"Aras Innovator client has failed to initialize.
Please, contact your system administrator to review your .NET security settings."

I am using a reasonably powerful Windows 7 Professional computer now with IE9 (I had IE10 and uninstalled it). Windows updates are turned off. I am running .NET 4.0. I have SQL Server 2008 installed, and IIS enabled (although I haven't done any configurations to either beyond accepting any default settings). I am not any kind of IT person, so anything beyond day to day computing is new to me, eg: IIS and SQL Server.

I worked through the installation guide, and have run the sdns.exe application with the settings suggested there, and have made the security settings to IE9 as described in Aras Innovator Internet Explorer Client Configuration.

I've tried accessing both 35emba2013l811/innovatorserver (which is what IIS tells me is the address for my install) and localhost/InnovatorServer, and both fail the same way.

There seem to be a bunch of posts from people having run into the same issue, but I've not found any that got resolved. I'd really like to try out Innovator, but I'm floundering. Can anyone help me out figuring this out?

Furthermore, I didn't have a desktop shortcut installed, even though the installation guide said one would be -- does this mean the installation went wrong somehow?

I think the following picture shows my .NET policies (I found instructions on this in a different post.)

I've also included the log from the sdns.exe app.

Thanks,
Toby.

Hi Toby,

This can sometimes be a frustrating thing.

This error is only related to the .Net security settings and the Trusted Sites in IE.

So just to be sure:

sdns.exe must be copied to a local directory on the machine it is to be run on.

sdns.exe should be run as Administrator

Enter the URL: localhost/innovatorserver in the sdns.exe box and hit OK.

Now go to IE | Tools | Internet Options | Security tab | Trusted Sites -> Sites button.

Add localhost to the trusted sites. Ensure that the "require server verification...." is unchecked.

Also ensure that you are using IE9 32 bit not 64 bit.

Hope this helps,

Brian.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply. It turns out that I had 3 problems. I was able to spend a couple of hours on the phone with a super-user, who very generously helped me work through my issues.

The problem that was demonstrated in my post above was caused by me using 64-bit IE9. As soon as I switched to 32-bit IE9, that issue went away. (I see that Innovator 9.4 is now available; maybe it works with 64-bit IE and this problem is moot.)

I had previously set-up IE according to the document on Aras' website, but nowhere in it does it say you shouldn't use 64-bit IE. That would be helpful info for them to have in there, right?

The other problems I had were that when I installed Innovator, I had specified my own password in the "Database Login Options" section. This part of the install process is described on page 27 & 28 of the install guide, where I read it to mean that I had to come up with a password of my own. Apparently, though, I was supposed to use 'innovator'.

The final problem could have been related to not using the correct password, but when installed, there were no Aras tables inside SQL Server. The folder structure was there, but it was empty -- so when I did resolve issue #1, and was able to get to the log-in screen, there was nothing to connect to.

All resolved now, and hopefully people who come along afterwards might be able to learn something from this post, as I saw numerous other posts with the same issue, and none of those seem to have been resolved.

Thanks,

Toby.
