June 3, 2009 Working on document lifecycle: major rev, minor rev, promotion, checkin / checkout. Any help greatly appreciated.
QUESTION: What permission, makes promotions available to a user?
PROBLEM. In Aras 9.10, trying to show simple demo of document management lifecycle(lifecycle, major rev, minor rev, promotion). Created new document, tried to promote document from query window. Error “No Promotions Available”. Same result from document detail window. Tried the steps below.
SUMMARY:
1. Logged in as admin, created a new document. Document starts out at Rev A, State is Preliminary, as expected.
2. After creation of document, Innovator has set up the following default lifecycle: lifecycle of type Document. First state of lifecycle is Preliminary. State Permission for Preliminary is New Document. Permissions for New Document include Get/Update/Delete/Discover for Creator, Owner, Manager, and Aras PLM.
3. Tried promoting the document from both query window and detail screen. Error “No promotions available”.
4. Tried setting document’s Assigned Creator and Designated User as admin (the identity I’m logged into Innovator with). Still unable to promote.
5. Tried adding admin to Aras PLM identity. Still unable to promote.

The promotion is only available to members of the Identity assigned to the Role property of Life Cycle Transition.
The standard Document Life Cycle Map assigns the "Aras PLM" Identity to the Role of all transitions.
The "Aras PLM" Identity is used by the ECN process to promote Documents. You should not make users members of the "Aras PLM" Identity exept in debugging scenarios, or you could corrupt your change management process with undocumented promotions.
If you do add your Identity as a member of a Role Identity like "Aras PLM", you may need to log out and log back in to see the change.
