according to the on-line help, I should be able to go into admin, preferences, then click on "world" to see the options, however I don't see that. All I got after clicking the "world" is the dialog to add members. Is this correct?

it seems that by clicking the names in the preference main grid, it opens up the dialog for Identities instead of the grid customization window.

Try to double clicking on the first column(the lock status column) where there is no hyper-link.
The word "World" is a hyperlink to the "World" Identity, and not to the Preference Item.

I did that, it opened up the window like you said. However I could not add column there to the grid. I did lock it.

Highlight a Position cell in the Project Grid Layout, and this will enable the "Insert Above" and "Insert Below" buttons.
