If you edit an ItemType, you can assign a property with data_type=Multi Value List. The property is represented by a special dhtml field on the itemtype form (the field is based on SELECT dhtml object) and the special .Net control (like standard combobox, but with checkboxes for every option) in RelationshipsGrid, ConfigurableGrid.
