SUPPORT Q&A - Aras Innovator client has failed to initialize

Chiara - Tuesday, April 27, 2010 4:37 AM:

Hi, I've just installed Aras, but it seems I can't get it working on my browser (Explorer 6). On the top of the popup I can see this browser message: "Internet Explorer has blocked this site from using an ActiveX control in an unsafe manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly." Inside the popup I can see this message: "Aras Innovator client has failed to initialize. Some required controls ('WindowsAuthenticationHelper.dll', 'Converter.dll', 'UpdateIntercommunicationLayer.dll', 'IOM.dll') were not loaded. Reinstalling application may solve this problem." In the Internet Options of the browser I have added the url within the trusted sites, and I've enabled ALL the settings with prompt. In fact, I can see the prompt for running those software: "WindowsAuthenticationHelper", "Converter", "UpdateIntercommunicationLayer", "IOM". In the sdns.exe log files I can see that everything went ok. Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance, Chiara

I am having the exact same problem and thus far have not found any solution.  I have followed all of the support documentation for configuring the client, and also configured according to our IT dept's instructions.

Using the same client config. procedures, it works fine for me in Windows7/IE8 but will not run in XP/IE8 even with .NET 2.0 installed and configured, and all browser settings correct.  Two PC's, same network, same location, same browser/settings.

I am starting to wonder if this exact error message is anything related to running Windows XP SP3.  But if I find anything out, I will definitely post it.  At the moment I have tried every recommendation and the client still won't run on my PC.

Good news!

I got this to work on about the 6th try of resetting my IE settings, and then re-enabling the ActiveX related settings one by one.    note that I also had already customized my .NET 2.0 settings as per the documentation, so that may still be required for anyone who hasn't already done that.

Here is what I found worked, to avoid or get around this exact error.

- be sure your site is saved under Trusted Sites

- Internet and Intranet settings are of no particularly real concern, just make sure you enable the following settings under Trusted Sites, not the other Custom settings.

*ActiveX controls

Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt
-Enable

Download signed ActiveX controls
-Enable (should already be enabled anyway)

Download unsigned ActiveX controls
-Enable

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting
-Enable

*Downloads

File download
- Enable

so it was a trial and error thing.  apparently even though I set my settings up the previous time, it still was just slightly off and probably as few as one setting was still preventing it from running.
