My company develops system products made up of circuit boards, mechanial enclosures and miscellaneous parts. Right now I am looking at how to set up Innovator so that we can have a database of electronic components that have our own internal part numbers that can be used by the designers in their circuit boar designs. This means I need to create a huge database of electronic components (and component families) with alternate sources and approved vendors, data sheets etc. I am prepared to do this, but I am a bit confused by the model that Innovator seems to use for parts. What I mean when I say parts is something like resistors, capacitors, inductors, digital ICs etc. The documentation in the help app shows a tree around parts and describes the relationships. I see from this that what I am calling a part is really probably a component, so semantics aside, I don't see where or how a central database of electronic components would be created and used across multiple projects (products) and BOMs.
Does this make sense? Can anyone explain how to use to tool for this?

I'm not sure i really see where your issue is. But Parts perfectly fits your needs. The component that you saw is just a subclass of Parts which allows you to apply a specific lifecycle or some specific properties.
My advice would be:
- in your admin folder, go in ItemTypes and edit "PArts"
- add some subclass under component like "resistor, inductors..."
- then you can just create all your parts choosing the adequat subclass
This way you'll get all the features you need, Approved Manufacturer lists, altrenates... And you' ll be able to build products, BOM (relationship made between a Part and another Part), include these inside projects, etc...

Yoann,
Thanks for the response. I'm brand new to Aras so I had a tough time explaining my question in decent context. I will try what you recommend and go from there.
Best regards,
