SUPPORT Q&A - Windows Authentication

Charlatat - Wednesday, May 19, 2010 9:06 AM:

I'm looking for the guide:

Aras Innovator – Windows Authentication

as mentioned in the 9.2 installation guide. So far, haven't been able to find it (not in the Documentation section of this site). Can someone link it, or point me in the right direction?  Thanks much

Hi Charlatat,

Thank you for your interest.  Windows Authentication and the associated user guide are a subscriber only benefit.  For more information on subscription please visit www.aras.com/.../support.aspx or email [email protected].

Best,

Jennifer

What about the SharePoint tie-in? I'm assuming that this wouldn't work without the Active Directory hooks?

Jennifer - Thursday, May 20, 2010 10:34 AM:

Charlat,

Windows Authentication is not required to work with Sharepoint, it's more of a nice to have.  It would be helpful for me to understand the context of your desire to integrate with Sharepoint to share with you a few different avenues and options.

Best,

Jennifer

We utilize SharePoint heavily in our organization and are trying to find solutions that are either native or have ties into SharePoint.  Currently, we have an open source PLM solution that we're trying to migrate away from.

RobMcAveney - Thursday, May 20, 2010 11:07 AM:

How do you want to use SharePoint with PLM?  Do you want SharePoint documents to be viewable from the PLM solution?  Do you want PLM data to show up inside SharePoint?  Do you only want users to use SharePoint and rely on a PLM back-end with no native UI?  What are your PLM requirements (parts/BOMs, sourcing, program management, quality)?  There are many use cases for PLM and SharePoint, so it's difficult to answer your question without more details.

Hi Rob, we have a similar situation.  We rely heavily on SharePoint for much of our document control.  I have looked at the information on http://www.sharepoint-plm.com/, and it looks like what we need.  What interested me most was having data show up on SharePoint as an overview, then being able to drill down into that data by launching Aras Innovator.  How does one go about setting this up, I haven't found any documentation on that.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott -

Which version of SharePoint are you using?  There's a bunch of code available on plm.codeplex.com for MOSS 2007.  We've also done some work recently on SharePoint 2010.  We are working on packaging the results of that project for public release.  We provide the tools you need to integrate SharePoint and Aras Innovator, but it does not currently come preconfigured so there is some setup involved.  I would suggest first detailing your PLM requirements, then figuring out which pieces should be exposed through SharePoint.  After that, circle back with me and we can discuss the best way forward.

Thanks Rob,

I have my hands full at the moment getting Aras set up the way we need it.  I suspect that when all the necessities are done, people are going to want SharePoint integration.  I will contact you when that is the case.
